A SYRIAN AFFAIR AT THE CIDB CONVENTION CENTRE

The Syrian Arab Republic is an Arab country in Southwest Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Seawith a GDP growth of 4% p.a., it is well on its way to develop itself into a modern city. Recently, they have identified some major development projects around the country, particularly at its capital and largest city, Damascus.

With its Strategic Master Plan drawn up, the Syrian Government has opened up the bid for Malaysian companies to partake in the development process, and Protasco Berhad was not left behind to jump in the bandwagon.

On January 8th, 2009, as the Prime Minister of Syria, His Excellency Mohammad Naji Otri was being hosted by the CIDB for a Malaysian Construction Industry Showcase in Kuala Lumpur, Protasco Berhad took up a booth in the exhibition as one of the major players in Malaysia’s construction industry with serious experience overseas, particularly in Syria.

The participation resulted in some good publicity highlighted by Malaysia’s Works Minister, YBhg Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed who mentioned Protasco’s projects with the Arab Republic totalling up to more than RM 1 billion.

In an article carried by The Star, dated 9 January 2009, Datuk Mohd Zin mentioned that “Protasco was among the Malaysian construction players looking to expand their overseas market in Syria. (One of) the project that Protasco is involved in is a proposed project to design and build a multi-storey car-park and road tunnel worth €110.75mil (RM530mil)”.

1. Development of Damascus Ring Highway Project

Current situation : Inter-country commercial trips (Jordan-Lebanon-Turkey) will require travellers to go through Damascus City’s congested Central Business District (CDB) links. With rapid area growth at Ad’raa Industrial City and expansion of the new airport, the congestion at the city links are expected to worsen.
Solution : The CIDB-HCM JV (Protasco) is developing a radial bypass route, which will give alternative for travellers to bypass the congested CBD links. This radial bypass route is called the Damascus Ring Highway.
Project cost : The total cost of the development of Damascus Ring highway Project is approximately €280 million.
