Water is life. It is the prime nutrient providing all living organisms with hydrogen, oxygen and a cellular solvent. Water supply programme in Malaysia with a population of nearly 26 millions, needs nearly 16 billion litres of water daily. This water supply may be used for domestic, commercial, industrial, agricultural and for public purposes. It is extremely important that people receive clean, potable water and that wastewater be discharged in an environmentally safe manner. Wastewater is defined as a combination of the liquid or water-carried wastes removed from residences, institutions, commercial and industrial establishments, together with the groundwater, surface water and stormwater. Wastewater contains numerous pathogenic or disease-causing microorganisms and if wastewater is allowed to accumulate, the decomposition of the organic materials it contains can lead to the production of large quantities of malodorous gases. Realizing the importance of water-related knowledge in today’s challenging world, Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC) takes an initiative to introduce a new programme namely Bachelor of Technology (Hons) in Water and Wastewater starting March 2009. The main focus of the programme is to provide knowledge and technological aspects and development in operating and maintaining public and private water treatment plants, water distribution systems, wastewater treatment plants and wastewater collection systems. The course focuses on technologies and associated management strategies for water operations. The graduates from this programme will embark as technologies in the water utilities, environmental consultancies, process contractors, equipment manufacturers, environmental agencies, suppliers serving the water and environment sectors and companies where water and wastewater processing are a major concern. They will also be associated with the management in these fields. Graduates may also pursue research degrees in this area. Entry Requirement STPM with 2 relevant Principals OR Certificate in Matriculation/Foundation OR Recognised Diploma OR other qualifications as accepted by the Senate with minimum CGPA of 2.00.
